April 9, 2025 | Bloomington, Ind. — In the face of what activists are calling a wave of politically motivated disappearances and detentions, members of the Indiana-based resistance movement “Indiana 50501” are using Reddit to share survival tools — including “dead man’s switches” — to alert loved ones if they go missing.
The subreddit r/indiana50501 exploded in activity after a post from a user went viral last week, detailing how to use automated email systems that activate if a user stops checking in online. The idea: if you’re silenced, your story won’t be.
“If God forbid you are disappeared… this site can send a series of emails and messages to whomever you want,” the post reads. “Use it to inform people that you recently attended a protest and didn’t make it back.”
The post has drawn over 11,000 upvotes and sparked an urgent conversation about digital security and the growing climate of fear in the United States, particularly in university towns and immigrant communities.
Recent viral videos have shown what appear to be secret police — reportedly ICE tactical units — pulling immigrants off the streets without trial. Civil liberties advocates have confirmed that detainees have vanished into undisclosed detention centers. In one widely reported case, a U.S. permanent resident was wrongfully deported to El Salvador due to a bureaucratic error. The man now languishes in what human rights groups are calling a “labor death camp,” while the Trump administration continues to fight his return.
In Bloomington, the situation has hit especially close to home. Indiana University confirmed this week that several international students had their visas suddenly revoked. No explanation has been offered. The Bloomingtonian reached out to the University but hasn’t received a reply.
Even more alarming, a prominent IU professor (Xiaofeng Wang) — who held a senior role in the administration — disappeared following a March raid by FBI agents. University officials have issued no public statement, and the professor has not been seen since.

The Indiana 50501 subreddit, created in January, serves as a digital town square for Hoosiers resisting what they call the authoritarian consolidation of power under former President Donald Trump and his controversial executive DOGE appointee Elon Musk.
The forum is “dedicated to resisting authoritarian policies and advocating for civil rights, government accountability, and social justice across the state.”
The tools being shared include services like SnugSafe, DeadMansSwitch.com, and guides on secure communication and digital estate planning. Some password managers, like LastPass, also include “emergency access” features for trusted contacts.
