Man arrested for allegedly distributing fentanyl, meth near Jordan River Trail

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly distributing drugs — including suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine — near the Jordan River Trail.

Alexander James Hall, 36, was arrested for several charges, including possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, officers with its Bike Squad observed a group gathering around Hall near Redwood Road and North Star Drive. The group split up as officers approached.

Hall is accused of trying to leave the scene by illegally crossing the street, but officers were able to stop him and detain him, according to police.

“During the investigation, officers recovered fentanyl pills packaged in small bindles, along with methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and cash,” SLCPD said.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. In 2023, 48% of overdose deaths in Utah were fentanyl related, according to opidemic.utah.gov.

“Fentanyl remains one of the most dangerous drugs in our community,” police said.

Hall reportedly admitted to selling fentanyl, according to police. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on the aforementioned charges.

SLCPD said the investigation happened as part of the department’s “ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal activity along the Jordan River Trail and to help restore community safety.”

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
