The protest is a part of the 50501 Movement, which stands for “50 states, 50 protests, one movement.” In other words, protests are taking place nationwide on Saturday, all falling under the 50501 banner.
According to the movement’s website, its purpose is to “[show] the world that the American working class will not sit idly by as plutocrats rip apart their democratic institutions and civil liberties while undermining the rule of law.”
Per the 50501 Movement, the flagship Indianapolis protest works alongside similar groups such as Indivisible and Hands Off, yet various other protests are currently underway across the Hoosier State.
“Remove, Reverse, Reclaim,” the movement states. This means that demonstrators aim to remove corrupt politicians and restore civil rights that they argue were overturned by President Trump and Indiana lawmakers.
Just four days prior, hundreds of protestors had also gathered at the Indiana Statehouse to rally against proposed federal Medicaid cuts.
