Fatal multi-vehicle crash closes all southbound lanes of Dan Ryan Expressway at 87th St. early Sunday morning, ISP says

CHICAGO — A fatal multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning is causing what Illinois State Police say are expected to be extended delays on the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway, with all southbound lanes closed at 87th Street.

According to ISP, troopers responded to that location around 3:15 a.m. to the report of a fatal three-car crash. All southbound lanes on the Dan Ryan Expressway are closed at the crash scene early Sunday morning, with traffic being diverted off the expressway at 87th St.

While ISP has confirmed the crash was fatal, they have not said how many people were killed or injured, or how the crash may have started. It also looked like as many as six vehicles may have been involved in the crash, though so far ISP has only said it received a report of a three-car crash.

The top half of one car appeared to be sliced right off, a semi-truck lost a tire and had back-end damage, and at least two other cars had severe damage with deployed airbags.

The crash scene is active, ISP says, and no additional details have been given at this time.
