Special jaguar cub makes debut at the Baton Rouge Zoo

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — It was a celebration full of pride, history, and Southern spirit at the Baton Rouge Zoo — all centered around one very special newcomer.

Meet Lacumba the Third, a playful and curious jaguar cub who made her highly anticipated public debut. The event drew students, staff, alumni, and supporters of Southern University, all eager to witness a moment that blended tradition, education, and wildlife conservation.

“This is a symbol of our pride and the excellence that comes from Southern University,” said Kennedy Orr, President of Southern’s Student Government Association.

Southern University is the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to house a live exotic animal mascot. The name “Lacumba” means Heart of Africa, a fitting title for a legacy that spans more than five decades.

The original Lacumba was introduced in 1971, and now, more than 50 years later, Lacumba III carries the torch — and she’s already captured hearts.

“Today we’re here to celebrate her debut and also the shared legacy and the commitment to honor Southern University’s cultural history and educational impact,” said Baton Rouge Zoo Director Jim Fleshman.

Lacumba III is also a milestone for the Baton Rouge Zoo — she’s the first jaguar born at the facility in more than 30 years. Her arrival represents not only a biological success for the zoo but a symbolic one for the Southern community.

“We’re just thrilled,” Orr added. “It’s something our community truly needed, and it’s a great way to unify us all.”

The celebration featured the world-famous Human Jukebox, bringing high energy and school spirit to the debut. As the music filled the air and families gathered to catch a glimpse of Lacumba III, it was clear — this was more than just a day at the zoo. It was a moment of unity, legacy, and hope for the future.

Lacumba III is now on exhibit at the Baton Rouge Zoo and is already becoming a favorite among guests.
