The fire broke out just after 1 p.m. Friday in the 4900 block of North Damen at Crystal Cleaners in the city’s Ravenswood neighborhood. Flames and heavy smoke spilled from the rooftop, stunning neighbors like Todd Patterson.
“I’ve got a big back deck behind my unit and went out to see what was going on. There was just a slight bit of orange flames shooting off the roof of the dry cleaners next door,” Patterson told WGN News.
Video captured from Patterson’s phone showed firefighters running to the scene to try to control the blaze.
“I came back out on the deck and wow, the flames were, I don’t know, 10, 20 feet high, shooting off the roof,” Patterson said.
According to the Chicago Fire Department, the dry cleaners sustained heavy damage. Patterson said the dry cleaner had been a mainstay in the neighborhood for years.
“The dry cleaner has been there as long as I’ve been there,” he said. “Real nice folks that run the place. It’s really sad that it looks like their whole business was impacted here.”
Officials reported no injuries. Fire crews have since extinguished the blaze.
Friday’s incident was the second dry cleaner fire this week. WGN-TV reported Wednesday that a fire at Kenny the Kleener on Dempster Street around 1:20 a.m. Officials said the fire was under control in about 30 minutes, and the cause remains under investigation.
