Deladgo Community College Coach of the Week: Mount Carmel’s Curtis Matthews

NEW ORLEANS — Curtis Matthews is in his sixth season as the head Mount Carmel softball coach. This year, he led the Cubs to their first Catholic League title in eight years.

“It meant a lot to us, but more to the girls. It was the first time any of them had experienced something like this,” Matthews said. “Myself and my assistants were part of this in the past as assistants, but none of these girls had an opportunity to feel that.”

The Cubs were undefeated in a district that produced six of the last seven Divsion I Select state champions. Matthews’ Cubs scratched and clawed their way to the top.

“We had to do it the hard way,” Matthews said. “Went 13 innings against John Curtis, extras against Chapelle and won those games by one run. Took a lot of effort, team effort.”

Matthews led Mount Carmel to the state championship in 2021. He said this year’s group has state title potential, and they haven’t even scratched the surface of what they can be yet.

“This team can hit the ball very well. And when we tap into that, this team will be hard to stop. It’ll take us as an entire team to win state, even get to Sulphur. One person isn’t more important than the rest, our girls believe in that. Team comes before the individual and we’re striving to work at that.”
