Police were called to the 10000 block of Avenue E around 7:45 p.m. regarding a robbery. BRPD said James Williams, 80, died at the scene.
On Friday, police announced Daniel Westley, 39, had been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and illegal use of weapons. Westley has an extensive criminal history that includes a homicide and a kidnapping, BRPD spokesperson Lt. L’Jean McKneely said.
Williams was shot and killed on his porch
Police said Williams was found deceased on his porch with a gunshot wound to the head. During the investigation, detectives learned that he hung out with other older neighbors and was known to sell marijuana.
One witness, returning from a store, heard a single gunshot and later found Williams dead.
Community tips lead to Westley’s arrest
According to arrest documents, witnesses said the suspect fled in a silver or black car toward Mills Avenue. Investigators developed Westley as a suspect through police databases and anonymous tips.
Police said surveillance video showed a silver Honda Accord with a dark gray hood, driver-side fender and door arriving at the victim’s residence. The video captured an individual in a white shirt, blue jeans and white shoes approaching the victim’s house.
A single gunshot is heard, and the suspect is seen running back to the vehicle before fleeing.
Police learned Westley owned a 2012 Honda Accord matching the description in the video.
Arrest documents said Westley was already in custody due to an Order of Protective Custody issued that morning by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. When officers found him, he was wearing the same clothing as seen in the surveillance footage.
Police collected his clothing as evidence at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.
Westley was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. The shooting is still under investigation.
