Sheriff Montgomery says change to inmate phone system was business decision with new federal law


As of April 1, new federal laws took effect, discontinuing the inmate phone system at the Baxter County Detention Center.
Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery told KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot News that while he disagrees with the change, the federal law has made it a business decision on how to allocate local tax dollars.

Montgomery said he is hopeful lawmakers in Washington, D.C., will revisit the issue, calling it a change that “makes zero sense.” He emphasized a statement made in articles statewide, saying he wishes people would care as much about crime victims as they do about criminals.

Montgomery said the phone system has helped solve and prevent many crimes over the years due to its ability to monitor calls.

Going forward, a radio system is being placed throughout the jail to provide inmates with a connection to the outside world, and visiting hours are being extended.
