Teen suspected of DUI in Clovis crash killing 2, injuring others

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – An 18-year-old was identified as the suspected DUI driver who allegedly caused a crash that killed two people and injured several others in Clovis Saturday evening, the California Highway Patrol announced.

According to Clovis police, around 9:30 p.m., while on patrol near Temperance and Gettysburg avenues, they heard sounds of a vehicle peeling out and driving recklessly.

As officers approached they witnessed a Dodge Charger peeling out and fleeing southbound on Temperance Avenue. Police say the Charger failed to stop for their lights and sirens.

According to CHP, around 9:40 p.m., officers responded to a major injury crash at the intersection of Temperance and Belmont avenues.

Investigators report 18-year-old Luis Felix of Fresno was driving a Dodge Charger southbound on Temperance Avenue at a high rate of speed when he collided with the left rear of a Toyota Camry stopped at a stop sign. The Toyota spun out but came to rest at the southwest corner of the intersection.

CHP says the Charger continued out of control and struck a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling northbound on Temperance Avenue. Both vehicles came to a rest blocking the intersection. Clovis police arrived on scene and immediately rendered first aid until EMS arrived.

Officers report two male passengers, both 19-year-olds, in the Charger, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third male passenger, age 20, sustained critical injuries while a fourth passenger, the only seat-belted occupant, sustained minor injuries. The driver, Felix, sustained major injuries and was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

CHP says the driver and women in the Tahoe sustained moderate injuries while the kids, aged 9, 4, and 1, sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Toyota who was initially hit sustained minor injuries.

Detectives are actively investigating the crash.
