Six deputies treated for fentanyl exposure in Louisiana

UPDATE, 3/28/25, 11:20 a.m.: The person accused of throwing the fentanyl has been identified as Reeshawn Arnold, 32. He is charged with seven counts of attempted first degree murder, two counts of drug possession and one count each of taking contraband to a penal institution, resisting an officer and obstruction of justice. He is also wanted on six extradition warrants, jail records show.

He is being held in the Lafayette Parish jail on a total bond of $1,127,500.

ORIGINAL STORY: LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Six Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Correctional Deputies are receiving medical treatment and monitoring after being exposed to fentanyl during an offender’s booking process.

The exposure to the lethal illegal narcotic happened Thursday afternoon inside the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center’s intake and booking area.

As the individual was being processed for an arrest by an outside agency, a white, powdery substance, later positively identified as fentanyl, was thrown at several deputies in the vicinity.

All six deputies have been transported to local medical facilities for evaluation and, if necessary, treatment for exposure to fentanyl.

This story will be updated as more information is released.
