Bust of a storm extends Portland’s cherry blossom season, for a short while

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The nothingburger storm that failed to bring 60-mph winds, quarter-sized hail, lightning and tornadoes to the Pacific Northwest Wednesday, will keep Portland’s cherry blossom trees blossoming, for now.

Portland Parks & Recreation maintenance supervisor Jennifer Trimm told KOIN 6 News that Portland’s cherry blossoms could stay in peak bloom for a second-straight weekend.

“Since we were spared the storm, the trees should be peaking all weekend through Monday,” Trimm said.

However, KOIN 6 Meteorologist Kelley Bayern forecasts stormy weather for later this week. The upcoming weather may cause the blooming cherry blossom trees to lose some luster in the coming days.

“Because we didn’t see any violent thunderstorms shaking the trees on Wednesday, the cherry blossoms may get a little more time to survive,” Bayern said. “However, with the breezy and rainy conditions expected today and Friday, as well as a persistent showery pattern into next week, damage to the blossoms is still possible. It would be wise to get out there sooner, rather than later to check out the bloom.”

Trees at Portland’s Japanese Garden are also currently at peak bloom. Enjoy the cherry blossoms while you can, Portland. Bring a coat.
