By rssfeeds-admin Johnston was elected to the Senate as a moderate Democrat in 1972, and he served four terms until he retired in 1997. Before his time in Washington, he served as a state representative and state senator.
According to Congress’s biographical directory, Johnston was born in Shreveport and graduated from LSU Law School in 1956.
Several Louisiana leaders have released statements sharing their condolences.
“Bennett Johnston was a giant in not just Louisiana politics, but National politics. There were few like him, and he will be deeply missed. Please join Sharon and me in praying for his wife Mary, their four children, and the entire Johnston family,” Gov. Jeff Landry wrote on X.
“Senator J. Bennett Johnston was a Louisiana champion and a champion for Louisiana. He played big but spoke softly. Composure was his superpower. Bennett loved Louisiana, loved America and loved his family. He was a great senator. Louisiana weeps,” Sen. John Kennedy said in a statement.
“J. Bennett Johnston was from North Louisiana and addressed needs in all of Louisiana. He lived a good life and left a great legacy,” Sen. Bill Cassidy wrote on X.
