On March 23, authorities with the Unified Police Department (UPD) responded to reports of a fight in progress at an assisted living facility near 1000 E Murray Holladay Road. When they arrived, authorities allegedly found a knife at the scene and the victim bleeding from a wound in their throat.
Mark Lloyd Yowell, 50, was arrested after multiple witnesses allegedly identified him as the perpetrator. Yowell allegedly lives in the same facility as the victim.
“Due to Witness statements who saw the altercation first hand, and video evidence obtained, it was clear the AP was not acting in self defense,” court documents read.
The video footage showed Yowell walking toward the victim with a knife and stabbing them, according to authorities. Officials did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the altercation and the alleged stabbing. Unified Police told ABC4 the victim’s wound was “superficial” and they were treated at the scene.
Yowell is facing one third-degree felony charge of aggravated assault. If convicted, he could face zero to five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fee. He was booked in the Salt Lake County Jail.
ABC4 reached out to the assisted living facility and did not receive a response by the time of publishing.
