SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — An assisted living resident has been arrested on suspicion of burglary, and he is accused of being a “habitual thief” and entering other resident’s apartments to steal cigarettes.
Craig Bowcut, 67, is facing potential charges of burglary of a dwelling, a second degree felony.
According to the affidavit, on July 27, Bowcut was caught entering another resident’s apartments and stealing cigarettes. Other residents who have allegedly been victimized told police that they no longer feel safe in their community.
The victim called Salt Lake City Police after she allegedly witnessed Bowcut enter her apartment and begin to feel around the area where she keeps her wallet. She said she asked him what he was doing, but he did not respond and continued to feel around for her wallet.
Bowcut had been caught previously with the victim’s wallet in his possession after taking it from her apartment, and he has also been found in possession of Marlborough Reds. The victim is the only resident in the assisted living facility who smokes Marlborough Reds.
Police allegedly found a pack of Marlborough Reds on his person on July 27.
Another resident reportedly saw Bowcut leaving the victim’s apartment that day, and the affidavit states that multiple other residents had issues with Bowcut entering their apartments without permission.
According to the arresting officer, the facility confirmed that Bowcut does not have any diagnosed cognitive health conditions. Staff at the facility also reportedly stated that the situation has gotten to a point where they cannot adequately protect the residents from Bowcut.
