ALEXANDRIA, La. (WNTZ) – The Louisiana Library Association (LLA) held its annual conference and its centennial celebration at the Hilton Capitol Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on March 20-22, 2025.  The awards ceremony was held on the evening of Friday, March 21, 2025.  During the ceremony, Kendra Bertrand and Shayne Bertrand were recognized as Louisiana Support Staff Association of Libraries (LaSSAL) Outstanding Support Professionals of the Year.  This is an award that recognizes an individual or individuals who made a significant contribution to further the development of paraprofessionals in Louisiana’s libraries. Their multi-year dedication to the LaSSAL Board as well as work in supporting conference activities, professional development opportunities, and engagement for their colleagues made the Bertrands obvious nominees and, ultimately, winners.

Mrs. Kendra Bertrand has worked for the Rapides Parish Library for five years.  She currently serves as Administrative Assistant and is known for her efficiency and expediency in fulfilling all organizational tasks for the Library.  Her competence and capabilities are often lauded by both her coworkers and her supervisor, Library Director Celise Reech-Harper.

Mr. Shayne Bertrand has worked for the Rapides Parish Library for over a decade.  He currently serves as the Branch Manager for the Robertson Branch in Tioga, Louisiana. His empathetic approach to patron service has made him a popular resource for assistance within the community as well as with his colleagues around Louisiana. He also serves the community as a Red Cross volunteer.

Both Bertrands have worked in libraries for many years, including roles at Louisiana State University in addition to their time at the Rapides Parish Library.  They are actively involved with the LaSSAL subdivision of LLA where they serve on the board and assist with arrangements, planning, organizational tasks, and hands-on implementation of planning. During their acceptance speeches, Mr. and Mrs. Bertrand commented on the beauty of service to their community and their good fortune in being able to enjoy their fulfilling roles together, as spouses of twenty-six years.
