Love Our Schools beautify seven Acadiana schools

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- Volunteers with Love Our Schools completed multiple beautification projects across seven schools in Acadiana.

The locations of the projects included Katharine Drexel Elementary School, L. Leo Judice Elementary School, Live Oak Elementary School, Milton Elementary School, Scott Middle School, Northside High School, and Comeaux High School.

Each of the schools received a grant from Love Our Schools to give a restorations to various locations on their campuses. Funds were also used from each school’s budget.

News 10 stopped by Comeaux High School and spoke with the program coordinator of Love Our Schools, Tyler Summerlin, and the Comeaux High Principal, Catherine Cassidy, who say these projects will create better learning environment for students and staff.

Among some of the improvements at Comeaux High School where additional letters in front of the gym, signifying the gym’s identity, new whiteboards installed in classrooms, and new computers and shelves in the library.

“Initiatives like these really let the teachers and the school administration know that their community is here for them, there’s also projects that they just don’t have the manpower for, they don’t have the time in their schedule and these are days where we get to put some love into action,” said Summerlin.

According to Love Our Schools, over 200 volunteers signed up to help beautify each school.

“A lot of this is volunteers showing up, bringing some materials with them, and then the school having some of the resources that they purchase with their school budgets that just need to be put together,” said Summerlin.

Cassidy told News 10 without help from Love Our Schools, these projects could have taken multiple years to complete.

“What they can accomplish in one day would have taken us probably a couple years, so to be able to have the volunteers and the manpower from all over the city and even from other schools, there’s people here from other schools that are donating their time, we’re super appreciative,” said Cassidy.

Cassidy said she’s thankful students and staff will get to see the new improvements on Monday.

“The amount of work that we’ve done along with their partnership has been amazing, just to know that people care enough to be able to give up their beautiful Saturday, to be able to come out here and donate their time and their efforts and talents, it is truly heartwarming,” said Cassidy.
