Rockford Public Schools mourn the passing of Guilford High School’s first principal

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Guilford High School’s first principal, Dr. Jack Swanson, has died at the age of 96, according to Rockford Public Schools.

Swanson was a Counselor and Assistant Principal at East High School from 1957 to 1961 before becoming Guilford High School’s first principal from 1961 to 1969, going on to serve as Assistant Superintendent of Highland Park and then superintendent of Oak Park and River Forest School District. He returned to Rockford as interim superintendent in 1989.

He graduated from East High School in 1945.

Swanson Stadium, located on the Guilford campus, is named after him. It opened in 1969.
