According to officers, it all began around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday when they responded to the North Oaks Medical Center on a reported kidnapping and rape.
During the investigation, detectives watched security footage of the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Donnie Lee Stevenson, getting into a red Honda Accord and leaving the location.
According to the Hammond Police, Stevenson drove from Independence to the Hammond Square Mall on Thursday, where he allegedly kidnapped the victim at gunpoint from the Target parking lot. He then allegedly drove her to an undisclosed location and raped her.
“He followed a victim out to their vehicle, held them at gunpoint, kidnapped them, forced them into their vehicle and then drove them around and ended up committing a sexual assault on this victim,” said Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron.
Detectives say Stevenson then took the victim back to Target and drove off.
“She… came across some citizens, she flagged them down. They began giving her assistance. They came across one of our police officers who was out patrolling. They flagged him down, told him what happened, at which point we went to North Oaks Hospital and she was seen by medical physicians,” said Bergeron.
On Friday Morning, HPD officers received a tip that Stevenson was at a home in Independence. Officers found him there, but he ran into the woods before being taken into custody. Police then quickly set up a perimeter near the home.
“We have somewhere in the total of I believe seven or eight different agencies, federal, state and local agencies, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, Hammond Police Department, Ponchatoula, Homeland Security, Air & Marine Customs. We have Louisiana State Police, I can go on and on.”
At around 11:30 that night, officers reportedly spotted Stevenson in the woods located in the perimeter and took him into custody.
Anyone with information regarding this case can call the Hammond Police Department at 985-277-5701.
