Clean up underway after storms pass through Carroll County

DELPHI, Ind. – The storms that rolled through central Indiana Wednesday night left behind quite a bit of damage in Delphi.

Clean-up was underway Thursday afternoon in Carroll County as straight-line winds brought down trees across the area. Much of the damage centered in Delphi.

FOX59/CBS4 caught up with Carol Daniels as she and her son and neighbors were cleaning up.

“Oh, it was spooky,” said Daniels. “My front door blew like that and it locked me and my son out of the house so he had to go clear around and unlock the door and we were standing there and hail was hitting us right in the face.”

Meanwhile, Connor Reilly’s house was narrowly missed when a massive tree fell next to his neighbor’s house.

“It was crazy, winds were going crazy and it lasted like an hour or so and before I knew it, I was looking outside and saw all this. It was insane,” said Reilly.

Carroll County EMA Director Mike Fincher said the National Weather Service was in town Thursday surveying the damage.

He said on top of tree limbs and power lines down, an apartment building was damaged leaving four families without a home.

But Fincher said what was more bizarre was when three transformers blew simultaneously.

“That was unusual,” said Fincher. “I’ve talked to some firefighters today and they have never seen one burn as hot as that one burned. It was a crazy phenomenon.”

Fincher said that luckily there were no injuries and the town has come together to help clean up.

“It could have been worse,” said Reilly. “It’s tough. But you know we get through stuff and we float on. It’s just great to see folk out here doing the thing, you know.”

“That’s one thing these smaller communities are really great for, is they always come out and help each other. It’s pretty cool,” said Fincher.
