Sunday storms could bring a very large hail threat

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) –  Most of the next few weeks will feature some rather pleasant weather.  That probably will not be the case this Sunday when strong to severe storms will bring a threat of damaging wind and possibly some rather large hail.

SPC Outlook:  The severe weather outlook from the Storm Prediction Center hasn’t changed much from yesterday and still lists our severe weather risk as being ‘slight’, or two on a 1 to 5 scale.  That means that if we have any severe weather reports, they would be rather scattered.

What we can expect on Sunday: A cluster of storms will begin to develop Sunday afternoon over the northern half of the ArkLaTex and then strengthen as they move to the southeast during the afternoon and evening.  We will have plenty of fuel for storms to increase in strength producing a damaging wind threat.  It still appears that the air above us will be cold enough to allow the potential for some rather large hail. If current model trends prove accurate, it’s possible that we could have a few reports of up to golf ball-sized hail.  The threat of tornadoes is looking low, but will not be zero.

How much rain?  It still appears that the heaviest rain will fall over the southeastern half of the area where we will see rainfall potential in the range of ½ to 1”.  Amounts will likely be below ½ further to the northwest.

10-day forecast for shreveport

10-Day Forecast: As I mentioned in my previous article earlier today, your 10-day forecast shows the period will start with cooler temperatures on Thursday with lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s.  We will warm up quickly heading into the weekend.  Highs will return to the upper 70s to lower 80s. Temperatures next week will likely stay above normal in the 70s and low 80s. Overnight lows will begin the period in the 30s and 40s and eventually return to the 50s next week. Most of the period will be dry as we will see our best chance of rain with Sunday’s storms.  Don’t expect much rain next week.
