Lawmakers call on federal government to stop cuts to fair housing

PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) — Pennsylvania lawmakers and officials from the NAACP gathered in Center City to speak out against federal cuts to fair housing.

Those in attendance on Monday, including State Senator Vincent Hughes, called on the federal government to “stop its attacks on fair housing” and unfreeze funds that were meant to go to organizations in Pennsylvania and across the country.

“Fair housing organizations in this region – around the commonwealth, around the country – just witnessed a decimation of their funding to do the work that they do, to educate and protect communities against discrimination,” said State Senator Vincent Hughes, (D) Philadelphia/Montgomery County.

Many housing organizations impacted by the cuts have since sued the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
