Wisconsin man already serving 50 years on child sex charges handed additional 10 years

PLANO, Ill. — A Wisconsin man who is already serving 50 years in prison for sexually assaulting a minor has been handed an additional 10-year sentence for a separate assault in Illinois.

37-year-old Reginald Hughes, an Oshkosh, Wisconsin, resident, has been sentenced to an additional 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after an agreed plea and sentence this week on the charge of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Tuesday.

According to prosecutors, the case against Hughes began in 2021 after a minor, who was under the age of 13, discovered that a friend of a family member had sexually assaulted her while she was staying in Plano, Illinois.

Amid an investigation into the claims, Plano police and officers in Wisconsin also learned that Hughes had sexually assaulted the victim in the State of Wisconsin as well, prosecutors said. In addition to the first victim, the investigation also revealed that Hughes had sexually assaulted another minor child.

Charges were filed against Hughes in December of 2021 and he was arrested shortly after and remained in custody in Wisconsin.

In 2024, the case against Hughes in Wisconsin proceeded to trial and after he was found guilty, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

After his sentence was handed down in Wisconsin, Hughes was taken to Illinois to await trial in Kendall County where an agreed plea and sentence was eventually reached this week.

Judge Jody Gleason approved the plea and sentence.

According to the agreement in Kendall County, Hughes will be required to serve at least 85% of his 60-year total sentence before he is eligible for Mandatory Supervised Release.

By law, Hughes is required to serve the sentences consecutively and must finish serving his 50-year sentence in Wisconsin first before he begins his 10-year prison term in Illinois.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office did not provide a booking photo for Hughes.
