ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Dust storms and large gusts of wind wreaked havoc on Abilene and the Big Country on Friday.

wind gusts were recorded between 50 and 60 miles per hour throughout the Big Country.

The strong winds have led to power outages across the area, impacting up to 8,000 customers earlier today. Downed power lines, fires, and dust storms have also been reported.

A brush fire ignited on Westlake Road near the Johnson Park turnoff, with residents unsure of its cause. The Abilene Fire Department responded quickly, deploying four brush trucks, two regular trucks, and two engines to contain the flames. Their swift efforts brought the fire under control.
