Bend man dies in avalanche near Diamond Lake Resort, officials say

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Bend man was killed in an avalanche near Diamond Lake Resort on Thursday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Officials say the avalanche took place at Mt. Bailey around 3:45 p.m. The victim was identified as 50-year-old Brian Thomas, who was skiing at the time of the incident.

“Despite efforts by fellow party members who swiftly dug him out, and attempted lifesaving efforts by two nurses on the scene, Roberts succumbed to his injuries in the remote location,” DCSO said.

The other members of the ski party were able to make it to the nearest snowmobile trail where they were assessed by emergency responders.
