Cabbage prices up 8 percent for St. Patrick’s Day

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — What would St. Patrick’s Day be without cabbage? They’ve become part of the celebration, but this year they are more expensive.

You may need a pot of gold to afford cabbages this year for St. Patrick’s Day.

“They increased by 8%, this seems to be speeding up,” she said.

Osman Kazan, Director of Business Analytics at Tulane University said cabbage prices are higher because of production costs, and weather’s playing a part.

“I basically collected data and crunch numbers and found co-relation between heat waves and cabbage prices. When temperature is high than production seems to go down,” he said.

Currently the prices feel “unlucky” because a sack of cabbage costs between $22-$25. A head of cabbage is around $1.75. So will this prevent the Irishmen from tossing lots of cabbage in the parades?

“We all know the Irishmen, so they will still be handing out cabbage,” Kazan said.

Don’t expect the “luck of the Irish” to help anytime soon.

“Because of the trade war and tariffs war, they are likely to increase. Global warming affecting food prices, particularly cabbage prices, this trend is likely to stay for awhile,” he said.
