Crashes, trespassing, and public nudity: Janesville PD receive complaints of annual teen ‘Nerf War’

JANESVILLE, Wis. (WTVO) — Janesville Police are warning high schoolers of serious legal consequences of playing “Nerf War” in public.

Police say they have already received complaints regarding the annual game, played by high school students, in which teens attempt to shoot other teens with Nerf guns.

Authorities said in the past, the game has resulted in traffic accidents, trespassing, disorderly conduct, and public nudity.

“More recently, reports have surfaced of participants entering residences that do not belong to them—sometimes while carrying Nerf guns that could easily be mistaken for real weapons. These actions have led to confrontations between participants and concerned residents, creating unnecessary fear and potential danger,” police said in a statement.

Law enforcement added that a Nerf gun can be interpreted as a real weapon by onlookers, leading to potentially dangerous situations, panic, or law enforcement intervention.

Authorities said any illegal activities associated with the games will be prosecuted.

“Students, please be mindful of your actions, respect private property, and avoid situations that could cause alarm or confusion,” police said.
