SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Authorities say a three-year-old is in critical condition after she allegedly found a gun and shot herself at a unit on Rasberry Lane in the Westwood Village Apartment complex.

According to the Shreveport Police Department, a friend of the girl’s stepfather laid a gun down on a table in the apartment and both men went outside. Police say the toddler was left inside the apartment unsupervised with the gun.

Detectives say the three-year-old then took the gun and accidentally shot herself in the stomach. SPD says she is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Shreveport Police have detained the stepfather. However, the stepfather’s friend fled the scene with a gun before the police arrived.

This is an ongoing investigation.
