Rockford’s Singer Mental Health Center may be demolished for new development

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The abandoned Singer Mental Health Center in Rockford could be demolished to make way for new development, utilizing funding from Gov. JB Pritzker’s 2026 budget plan.

The governor proposed $300 million from the “Surplus to Success” program, which would make certain state-owned sites “shovel-ready” for new economic opportunities.

The 100-acre Singer Mental Health Center, at 4402 North Main Street, is included on a list of closed or deteriorated sites the state has identified.

The Singer Mental Health Care Facility was closed down in 2012.

Last week, firefighters battled a blaze in a non-functioning elevator car within one of the structures.

Over the years, the facility has been “heavily vandalized,” according to the Rockford Fire Department.
