OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) — An Opelouses veteran allegedly had his pension stolen by his caregivers, who have both been arrested, authorities said.

Marvin Washington, 63, of Opelousas, is charged with exploitation of the infirmed and access device fraud, and Mary Washington, 63, of Opelousas, is charged with accessory after the fact to exploitation of the infirmed, after turning themselves in this morning, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, a 77-year-old blind military veteran, was hospitalized due to a fall and required medical and rehabilitative care. When proof of income was required, authorities said they discovered the victim’s caregiver, Marvin Washington, was taking the victim’s $1,408-per-month VA benefit and using his financial account without proof of authorization. The victim was also denied the rehabilitation required by medical professionals, officials said.

Mary Washington was allegedly implicated in the scheme and was charged with accessory after the fact to exploitation of a person with infirmities.

Bond details were not released.

Out of respect to the victim and concern for his personal and financial safety, his identity was not released.
