Former Southern University student charged in hazing death case

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — One suspect accused of being connected to the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson is now in custody.

According to jail records, Caleb McCray is in police custody as of Thursday evening. McCray is charged with manslaughter and criminal hazing. Jail records show a bond amount has not yet been set.

McCray is a graduate of Southern University and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said around 15 to 20 people were at the warehouse where Wilson collapsed, which included fraternity members and pledges for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Statement from McCray’s attorney

The lawyer representing McCray released a statement Friday morning. Attorney Phillip Robinson of The Robinson Law Firm LLC described the charges McCray faces as serious and urges the public to hold back on judgments until evidence is heard.

“We are committed to ensuring that all facts are properly examined and that due process is followed. Many details being reported in the media may be incomplete, false, or lack proper context,” Robinson said.

“As legal counsel for Caleb McCray, I wish to address the charges that have been brought against my client in connection with the tragic death of Caleb Wilson.

“First and foremost, we extend our deepest condolences to the Wilson family. The loss of such a
bright light is an immeasurable tragedy, and our hearts go out to all who knew and loved Caleb Wilson.

“The charges brought against Mr. Caleb McCray are serious, and we acknowledge the gravity of
this matter. However, it is essential to remember that an accusation is not proof of guilt. At this time, I have not been presented with any evidence to support such serious accusations. I maintain my client’s innocence and urge the public to withhold rushing to judgment until all the evidence is heard.

“Many young lives in our community have been altered by this tragedy. The impact has been felt
throughout Southern University, particularly within the renowned Southern University marching band, “The Human Jukebox,” and among all families involved. Mr. McCray should be afforded the opportunity to establish his innocence in the court of law.

“At this time, we are thoroughly reviewing all evidence and circumstances surrounding this case.
We are committed to ensuring that all facts are properly examined and that due process is followed. Many details being reported in the media may be incomplete, false, or lack proper context.

“Mr. McCray and his family will not be making public statements during this difficult time. We
ask that their privacy be respected as the legal proceedings move forward.

“Any further inquiries should be directed to our office.

“Our thoughts remain with all those affected by this tragedy, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served through a fair and thorough legal process.”
