Six Rockford teachers honored with 2025 Golden Apple Award for excellence

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Six Rockford-area teachers were surprised in their classrooms Thursday morning as winners of the 2025 Golden Apple Award.

Members of the Golden Apple Foundation, along with Eyewitness News Anchor Mimi Murphy, visited classrooms to surprise the teachers with new of their win.

The first stop was at the STEAM Academy of Haskell’s kindergarten class to let teacher Jenna Holcomb know she is a recipient of the excellence in teaching award.

In all, six winners received awards on Thursday:

  • Jenna Holcomb, kindergarten teacher at STEAM Academy of Haskell in Rockford
  • Alyssa Passmore, 2nd grade teacher at Keith School in Rockford
  • Allison Rhyner, kindergarten and special education teacher at Donald C. Parker Early Education Center in Machesney Park
  • Jackie Weerda, kindergarten teacher at Ledgewood Elementary School in Roscoe
  • Kellie Kim, special education resource teacher for grades 2nd and 5th at Cherry Valley Elementary School
  • Lisa Robinson, kindergarten teacher at Rolling Green Elementary School in Rockford

The award also includes a cash prize, professional development stipend, and a Rockford University scholarship.

The six teachers won from a list of 20 finalists and will be honored at the Golden Apple Excellence in Education Award Banquet in April.
