“Our last season, I think we started out 2-7-1, and this year the guys have kind of turned it around a little bit, but it is early on,” head coach Riley Fincher said. “You’ll have a lot of people say you want to be playing at a high level late in the season. Our goal is every time we step on the field to be playing our best. ”
The Hawks currently sit at 10-0, defeating multiple ranked teams and they themselves sit at no. 2 in the 4A division.
So how do the Hawks plan on continuing their dominance and not plateauing as the season progresses?
“A lot of it is on our players, they understand what we expect of them here, what this program expects of them, and so it’s every time they step out here in practice, they’re all in,” Fincher said. “They attack the day every single day and so that’s our job as coaches also to make sure that we continue to stay on top of them every single time.”
One of the things that has stuck out to the staff is the mature comradery that the team has already developed.
“I think the main thing that surprised us, is how close they are as a team already. Every year the team is new, we do have a lot of guys who played last year and the year before, but there’s some new pieces in there this year, but to see how close they are, especially after these last two tournaments, we got to spend the night on the road,” Fincher said. “You can tell it’s a group that’s played, you know, 85, 90 games together in high school.”
Pleasant Grove is bringing back nine of its starters from last year, helping along that team chemistry.
The Hawks open district play on Tuesday, March 4 against Pittsburg and will continue tournament play in Hallsville on Thursday, March 6.
