Ray’s Bakery owner shared thoughts following devastating fire
EUNICE, La. (KLFY) — Ray’s Bakery has been a staple in Eunice for more than 60 years. But now on what was supposed to be their busiest day of the year, has turned into a day of recovery after a devastating fire.
It was shortly after Ray’s closed on Sunday afternoon when owner Steven Oncale received the call that the bakery was on fire.
Oncale said, “It is what it is. I mean, it’s been here since 1959. I guess things happen.”
As the fire resulted in a total loss, Oncale reflected on his time at the bakery, he said he learned the key to their delicious pastries at a young age from his father.
“My daddy said, ‘You old enough to walk, you old enough to work,'” Oncale said. “Standing on crates to glaze donuts cause I couldn’t reach the bowl. But I learned for the best, my daddy was good.”
Although the community is hurt by the loss of a beloved business, there is already a plan being formed to help those who worked there in the form of a fundraiser from Joey Trichell.
City Marshall Terry Darbonne said, “This is what small communities do. We get together to help the employees that no longer have wages right now.”
There is also hope Ray’s will one day return to Eunice.
“I’m thankful for all the support and prayers and everything for the whole community trying to step in and help out a little. I want to thank them for their patience, we’re going to be back soon. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I’ll try.” Oncale said.
