Woman arrested on OWI charges after fatal crash in Daleville

DALEVILLE, Ind. — The Daleville Police Department has arrested a woman for her alleged role in a fatal crash that unfolded late Monday night.

According to a press release, 39-year-old Charlotte Ed Cleveland of Markleville has been preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) causing death, OWI causing endangerment to a person and OWI without financial responsibility.

The crash Cleveland was allegedly involved in happened in the 14600 block of West Main Street in Daleville.

Police first became aware of the crash around 11:09 p.m. Monday. At that time, the Delaware County 911 Center received a call from ONSTAR about a motor vehicle crash involving an unresponsive driver.

Subsequent reports Delaware County dispatchers received about the crash indicated powerlines were on fire.

When police arrived at the scene around 11:13 p.m., they found a deceased man underneath a vehicle. The Delaware County Coroner’s Office later identified the decedent as 22-year-old Jordan Cleveland of Anderson.

After an initial investigation, police determined the driver of a Toyota Camry was travelling eastbound of West Main Street before the crash. The driver of the Camry ultimately left the roadway and struck a street sign, a “Town of Daleville” sign and two telephone poles.

The Camry came to rest on its side in the middle of West Main Street. DPD reported that the roadway was shut down and electricity in the area was turned off during officials’ two-hour investigation of the crash.

Police believe Charlotte and Jordan Cleveland were in the same vehicle at the time of the crash. Charlotte Cleveland suffered significant head trauma during the crash, according to DPD.

Charlotte Cleveland was transported to IU Ball Memorial Hospital after the crash. Her injuries, though significant, are not believed to be life threatening, per DPD.

The most serious of the charges Charlotte Cleveland now faces — OWI resulting in death — is a Level 4 Felony. The maximum penalty for a Level 4 Felony in Indiana is a 12-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
