PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A driver whose blood alcohol level registered nearly three times the legal limit is now facing manslaughter after a hit-run crash with a power pole killed what investigators believe was the passenger of the car.

The driver, later identified as 27-year-old Leonardo Bollas-Zafra, was driving a Toyota Camry that sent an “automatic crash notification” around 2:30 a.m. near NE 201st and Broadway Court, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said.

About that same time, a man who said he was the victim of a hit-and-run near that spot called 911. That man, who was found at NE Halsey and Broadway Court, died from his injuries, officials said. His name has not been released.

After closely checking the scene, deputies said they believed the man was a passenger in the Camry driven by Bollas-Zafra and the Camry had hit a power pole before driving away.

Deputies spotted the man with his Toyota Camry nearly three miles away from where the crash happened, near NE 158th and Fremont. Authorities said Bollas-Zafra “appeared confused and struggled to answer questions.”

Since Bollas-Zafra “appeared impaired,” deputies gave him a field sobriety test and a “hospital blood draw” which showed a blood alcohol level of .23 – almost three times the legal limit.

Bollas-Zafra was arrested and booked into jail on charges of second-degree manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, DUII and reckless driving.
