Strong winds and blowing dust increase fire risk in the Big Country this Tuesday

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – According to the National Weather Service (NWS), another potential dust storm is forecasted for this upcoming Tuesday across the Big Country.

Strong southwesterly winds are expected to sweep across the region, bringing gusts up to 50 miles per hour. The powerful winds will kick up dust, create hazardous driving conditions, and increase the risk of wildfires.

Ensure that any outdoor furniture or decorations are secured. Additionally, avoid parking near trees or power lines.

This wind event comes at a time when much of the Big Country remains within the drought. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor highlights widespread areas of moderate to severe drought. Dry conditions combined with strong winds mean any spark could quickly turn into a dangerous wildfire.

In addition, many counties across Texas have issued burn bans, as shown on the map above. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to follow local fire restrictions. It’s also a good idea to avoid activities that could create sparks, like welding or using machinery in dry grass.
