Laurel County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim around 8 a.m. Friday at a shed behind a home off U.S. 25, about two miles north of London.
Authorities said they found 27-year-old Jacob Hurley, of East Bernstadt, who shot himself in the hand while cleaning a gun.
His girlfriend and 43-year-old Joseph Malicoat were also there.
Malicoat allegedly took off with the gun but was caught about a quarter-mile away and found to be a convicted felon—already wanted for stealing a van and fleeing police.
Hurley was airlifted to UK Medical Center, while Malicoat was charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. The sheriff’s office said Malicoat also faces charges related to a Feb. 5 incident where he allegedly stole gas and sped away from police in a stolen vehicle.
