The project will involve the closure of Whitman Street, from Court Street to Horsman Street, but will also shut down Ridge Avenue, south of North Avenue.
Residents will have access to their homes during the closure, and mail, trash, and emergency services will not be interrupted, according to Public Works.
According to the City of Rockford, the project will involve pavement removal and replacement, driveway approach removal and replacement, sidewalk, curb, and gutter removal and replacement, storm sewer upgrades, water main and water service replacement, sanitary sewer improvements, and traffic signal upgrades.
The plan, more than 15 years in the making, is part of a larger, $7.1 million effort to revamp the Whitman Street interchange.
