4 charged in connection to kidnapping of 1-year-old that led to statewide AMBER Alert

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Four people have been charged in connection to the kidnapping of a 1-year-old child that led to a statewide AMBER Alert on Feb. 21.

According to Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill, the mother of the 1-year-old is among the people who have been charged for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping of the child.

Holly Smith (the mother), Joey Jimenez, Eric Jimenez, and Jose Francisco Robles-Prieto are all being charged with first-degree felony kidnapping. The four suspects were

all arrested the same day the AMBER Alert was issued.

“We appreciate the people in our community who helped police get the information they needed to help find this baby and take her to safety,” Gill said Wednesday. “The vigilance of every citizen during an AMBER Alert can help save a child’s life.”

Smith is also being charged with child abuse and providing false information to a peace officer. Eric Jimenez and Robles-Prieto are being charged with one count of second-degree felony obstructing justice in addition to the kidnapping charge.

According to Gill’s office, a judge ordered Smith’s daughter into state custody on Feb. 21. Soon after the judge’s decision, Smith allegedly fled the courthouse. When a case worker with the Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) went to Smith’s last known residence, neither she nor the child were there.

Officials were informed that Smith was seen getting into a vehicle with Eric and Joey Jimenez, who were both taken into custody for obstructing and impeding the investigation. Joey Jimenez provided Smith’s phone number to police who activated an emergency ping.

Smith and Robles-Prieto, the child’s biological parents, were later seen walking with a shopping cart. Smith had a blanket over her head, and when police stopped them, she reportedly provided a different name.

She was identified by her tattoos and later told police that the child was in the shopping cart as she was being handcuffed.
