Bowling Green police responded to a call just before 1 a.m. on Sunday from a resident reporting someone kicking on their door, according to a news release.
The Bowling Green Police Department said the resident stayed on the line with dispatch while officers were on their way, but when the intruder made it into the apartment, he was shot and killed by the resident.
Police identified the man as 23-year-old Matthew Maggart, of Brentwood, Tennessee.
Investigators said they believe Maggart was impaired and lived in the complex, entering the wrong apartment by mistake.
Maggart was set to graduate from WKU in May.
