REXBURG — A local woman was arrested Tuesday evening after a standoff with police at a neighborhood in Rexburg.

Rexburg Assistant Police Chief Gary Hagen tells EastIdahoNews.com that a process server arrived at a residence in the 900 block of the Summerfield Subdivision to deliver legal documents to the occupants.

A female resident opened the door, armed with a rifle, and threatened the process server. Shortly afterward, Hagen said another family member, who was in the house, came out and got into a physical altercation with the woman.

Hagen said the process server left the scene and called 911 to express concern about the house’s occupants.

Officers arrived at the home at about 4:55 p.m. and discovered the woman had barricaded herself inside and was refusing to leave.

Police set up a perimeter, and nearby residents received a mobile alert to avoid the area and lock doors and windows.

Officers repeatedly attempted to contact residents in the home by phone but were unsuccessful. Officers loudly announced their presence and knocked on the door with no response.

After numerous attempts, officers determined to make entry into the home and ensure the safety of victims. Officers breached the front door and made contact with the suspect and victims.

Hagen said the woman was acting erratic and violent and would not comply with officer commands. After she refused to give up peacefully, officers entered the home and arrested the woman. She continued to fight officers after being taken into custody.

The victims inside the home were removed from the situation. No injuries were reported, Hagen said.

The woman’s identity has not been released. She is expected to be charged with aggravated assault and resisting officers.

Officers were still on the scene at 6:30 p.m.
