Bruins play well despite delay and defeat Pios

PORTLAND, Ore. (GFU Athletics) — Despite giving up their first point in conference play, the Bruins played well and rolled the Pios 6-1.

After the match got postponed from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, the Bruins were finally able to pick up their rackets and play some ball.

Their afternoon started with a 2-1 victory in doubles play, securing the doubles point for the fourth straight match. Lars Schmassmann and Ikuho Ebisu continued their reign at the top, winning their match 6-2. Jackson Whittaker and Luis Hernandez teamed

up in the No. 2 doubles spot, dropping their match 6-1 to the eventual No. 1 and No. 2 singles players from Lewis and Clark. Keita Shoji and Zach Moore secured the doubles point in a tight match, knocking off Spencer Loucks and Matt Chio 6-4.

With a point under their belt, the Bruins continued their hot play in the singles matches. Schmassmann kicked things off for Fox, winning his match 6-3, 6-3 as the No. 1 singles player. The Pioneers bounced right back, though, as Joey Lyon took down Moore in a similar fashion, 6-3, 6-3. Moore retired from his match yesterday due to injury but was good enough to make a comeback in today’s match against the Pios.

Ebisu and Whittaker both played in competitive matches in the No. 3 and No. 5 spots for the Bruins. Ebisu narrowly lost the first set 7-6 before bouncing back strong 6-2, 6-1 to win his match against LC’s Chio. Contrary to Ebisu, Whittaker started his match off strong with a 6-3 first-set victory. He almost closed it out in two sets, but lost in a back-and-forth affair 7-6. Whittaker was able to get it done in the third, though, taking care of business 6-3.
