Data from the Bureau of Labor shows attacks on healthcare facilities and workers have increased over the years.
One of the biggest questions is how did the gunman walk into UPMC Memorial Hospital armed with a handgun and zipties without anyone noticing.
There’s a petition circulating online that’s garnered about 300 signatures, urging UPMC to address, quote “Dreadfully inadequate” security measures.
John Sancenito, a security expert, tells me it’s not unusual for them to not have things like metal detectors.
The only time you really see them is at larger medical facilities. He notes there are a lot of pros to having detectors because they can serve as a deterrent but he also says they can make things more difficult.
“Some of the downside of it, first of all, it is very expensive,” Sancenito said. “Metal detectors have to be manned 24 seven. They have you have oftentimes have backlog of individuals. And sometimes these are emotionally charged individuals to begin with. They may not like the fact that they’re being held up. And also it can delay everyone going in and out of that setting.”
That was one of the biggest things sancenito pointed out, it’s hard to have both security and convenience.
We’ve reached out to UPMC Memorial for comment, they tell us they are not doing interviews at this time.
