The trooper identified as Belinda Murphy, 53, was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired (1st offense), two counts of vehicular negligent injuring and traffic-control signals.
According to LSP, troopers were called to the intersection of Plank Road and Harding Boulevard around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday where three vehicles, including a fully marked Baton Rouge Police unit, were involved in a crash.
Murphy was driving south on Plank Road in a Chevrolet Tahoe before the crash. At the same time, the BRPD unit and a Toyota Prius were turning left from Harding Boulevard to head south on Plank Road.
“For reasons still under investigation, Murphy disregarded a red light at the intersection, resulting in her Tahoe striking the Charger, which then collided with the Prius,” according to LSP.
Murphy was hurt in the crash and taken to a hospital along with the other two drivers. Injuries reported were minor to moderate.
LSP said Murphy showed signs of impairment and voluntarily submitted a toxicology sample. She was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Murphy was placed on administrative leave. She has been with LSP since 2001.
