ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) — A man from Maryland has been arrested for the alleged cyberstalking of a nun in St. Landry Parish, authorities said.

Officials said a complaint was made against John William Modler Jr., 57, of Ellicott, Maryland, in May 2024 for sending vulgar emails to a sister with the church since 2018.

According to officials, Modler was at a monastery in the St. Landry Parish area at the same time as the complainant. After the nun left the facility, Modler allegedly sent more than 100 emails using “deceitful tactics” to obtain the location of the sister as she travelled, including posing as a priest using an alias.

Officials said the investigation also revealed Modler had multiple active arrest warrants from multiple states implicating him in larceny and fraud.

While in custody in Texas, Modler was extradited to St. Landry Parish on the felony charge of cyberstalking/electronic mail, officials said.

Bond information was not released.
