As more vacant properties are becoming available in the historic district of downtown Opelousas, there have been constant reminders of the historic tax credit program from St. Landry Economic Development and Opelousas Main Street to let business and property owners know about the credits that can go towards renovations and getting the buildings back into commerce.
Gretchen Erlingson with Opelousas Main Street reflected on the history of the project.
“They’ve been working on this project for several years now to expand the national historic districts of Opelousas, particularly in our commercial corridor,” Erlingson said. “I believe the last time that was done was think back in the 70s or maybe early 80s.”
Lena Charles with the Downtown Development District said, as they pushed for business owners to apply for these tax credits, they’ve also worked with Opelousas Main Street to get that historic district expanded.
“So we thought last year, at the beginning of last year, what we would do is try to get the whole corridor off of the ODD historic so they could take advantage of the tax credit.” Charles said.
Speaking on those tax credits, Charles said businesses that apply for these credits can be looking at significant help when it comes to bringing life back to these buildings.
“The state had 35% tax credit and the federal is 25,” Charles said. “And that would make incentive for one of these older buildings. An architect that knows how to work the programs could be able to take advantage of 55% tax credit.”
Applications for business owners to get that 55% tax credit need to be done by June. June is also when they’re expected to see the full corridor of the downtown area be included in those tax credits.
