BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Three former Baton Rouge Police Officers filed an appeal with the 19th Judicial District Court to continue fighting to get their jobs back on the force.
At a Municipal Fire and Police Service Board meeting last month, the former BRPD officers lost their first chance to appeal their cases by a 4-1 vote. At a board meeting on Feb. 24, lawyers representing the officers said they had decided to file an appeal against the board. The hearing also involved the continued hearing on the Police Officer’s Bill of Rights brought forth by the officers. The “Officers’ Bill of Rights” is a Louisiana law that upholds fair and concise investigations for police.
Police Chief Thomas Morse originally fired Lt. Troy Lawrence Sr., Cpl. Todd Thomas and Cpl. Douglas Chutz in September of last year in connection to allegations of abusing a man in police custody and getting rid of the evidence back in 2020. A fourth officer, Martell Jackson, resigned but is also facing criminal charges.
The three officers’ original hearing was scheduled for March 24 but is now pending until the 19th JDC responds to their appeal. All officers have pleaded not guilty and await trial.
