SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — A Shreveport man has been arrested for the alleged rape of a 16-year-old according to Shreveport police.
The Shreveport Police Department says that on Friday February 21, officers responded to a call regarding a 16-year-old sexual assault victim who had reported being assaulted by Melvin Herrera.
Police say the victim underwent an emergency forensic interview, during which they provided specific details regarding the assault.
According to the press release from SPD, the suspect, Melvin Herrera, remained at the scene and was detained by officers. He was subsequently transported to the Shreveport Investigative (S.C.U) offices for questioning.
Police say additionally a portion of the incident was captured on video surveillance, which further substantiated the victim’s account of the assault.
As a result of the investigation, Melvin Herrera faces charges of Second Degree Rape (La. R.S. 14:42.1).
The Shreveport Police Department is continuing its investigation and is working closely with the District Attorney’s Office. Police say if convicted he could face up to 40 years in prison.
