According to the Shreveport Police Department, just before 4 a.m. officers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 westbound, between Jewella Avenue and Monkhouse Drive Sunday.
Police say officers found a gray 2023 Kia Forte pulled off the roadway and parked on the shoulder. The vehicle had sustained significant front-end and passenger-side damage. The driver, who was traveling westbound in the outside lane, reported striking an unknown object but was uncertain about what was hit.
After searching the area police found a deceased male in the inside lane of westbound I-20. Police say the individual had sustained severe injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Police say the driver was taken to SPD DWI offices, where they consented to Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, as well as blood and breath samples. Police say say there were no signs of impairment.
According to the press release, the scene was thoroughly documented with photographs, and fluorescent paint was used to mark the roadway. Police say the investigation findings show that the pedestrian was attempting to cross southbound across westbound I-20 when he was struck by the Kia Forte in the inside lane.
The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office responded and took custody of the victim.
Police did not find any identification on the victim at the time of the incident. Positive identification is pending fingerprint analysis.
Shreveport police says this tragic incident serves as a somber reminder that interstate roadways are not safe places for pedestrians or bicycles.
